O.K. I thought that I'd start a new topic.... I was watching the Ken Burns U.S. Civil War film ( I'm interested in the Civil War ) After the show was over I realized that I really don't know a thing about Canadian history.... So how about our Canadian friends give us some insight? _________________

Well for starters, Canada became a country (federation) in 1867 and our first Prime Minister was John A. Macdonald. I'll add more later! _________________ Love many, trust few, do harm to none - Yau man |

AS a pround Canadian I have no problem telling people about our wonderful country. We have a population of33,390,141. Consist of 10 provinces and 3 territories. Canada is the second largest country in the world. We have the worlds largest coastline. One fourth of the world freshwater resides on Canada, AS well as one tenth of the worlds forests. I will help Emma with this topic as best I can. _________________ Handle everything like a Dog

Big eddy I forgot to add is you are a civil war buff. I enjoy reading about it too. Try the war of 1812. It is amazing how much the two countries( even though we weren't officially canada back then) hvae effected each other. Did you know that the reasoin why The white house is called the white house is because doing that war we burned it and all they could paint it with is white wash. _________________ Handle everything like a Dog

Canada didn't take its present shape as a country until March 31, 1949...that's when Newfoundland joined as the 10th province. Before that, we were our own country under Prime Minister Joseph Smallwood. The government and citizens of the day figured it was the right thing to do.
Dan mentioned that we have the world's largest coastline...over 6,000 miles of that coastline is here in Newfoundland and Labrador. |

We should start a thread on American history as well because I know so little about the subject. _________________ Love many, trust few, do harm to none - Yau man |

Same with people here in Newfoundland...when the British (my ancestors) came here, their actions caused the extinction of an indiginous people here (the Beothuk)...in many cases the deaths of the Beothuk people were unintentional...they had no immunity against our diseases(colds, flu, etc). In many cases though, there was an extreme clash of cultures, and the Beothuk came out on the losing side. That's an unfortunate black mark on our history...but it's one we must live with. |
